| Highlights of North Sumatra, Orangutans & Bali |
|
With Dr. Gary Shapiro of Orang Utan Republik Education Initiative (OUREI) Dear Orangutan lovers, Join us on an eco tour to visit Sumatra, her beautiful vistas, colorful cultures, and intriguing wildlife. On this island, the fourth largest in the world, you will be amazed by how wildlife and people co-exist in their struggle for existence. The biodiversity of plant and animal life that has evolved is spectacular. Leaving the familiar surroundings of civilization and the highway, you feel you are transported back in time when walking into the verdant rainforest. The hikes can become somewhat steep as hills and mountains define much of the terrain. We will stay on trails to avoid damaging the fragile ecosystem. Along the way you will need to look carefully as most of the creatures prefer not to be seen. We will have trained guides who will point out the camouflaged wildlife. To be safe, make sure you bring a backup camera. The trip to Lake Toba should be unforgettable. This amazing volcanic lake and island is home to the Batak people. Our visit will include breathtaking landscapes and special encounters with the local people. Gunung Leuser National Park, one of our destinations, is home to some of the most charismatic and endangered mammalian species on earth: the Sumatran rhinoceros (Dicerorhinus sumatrensis), Sumatran tiger (Panthera tigris sumatrae), Sumatran elephant (Elephas maximus sumatrensis) and the Sumatran orangutan (Pongo abelii). Chances are we will not see the rhinos and tigers. However, we will see elephants and orangutans at Tangkahan and Bukit Lawang in North Sumatra. These precious animals continue to struggle for their long term survival, but they have allies in various non-government organizations as well as local governments that promote responsible ecotourism. Your participation in this ecotour is contributing towards the survival of these species by showing the local government and people you care enough to travel a great distance in order to experience the remarkable wilderness entrusted to them. It is a very powerful message. Additionally, your participation includes an automatic contribution to the Orang Utan Republik Education Initiative (OUREI), a program that Dr. Gary Shapiro (our naturalist) started with his Indonesian wife in 2004, which supports education programs in Indonesia saving wild orangutans. So prepare for an extraordinary travel adventure. Tour is limited to 13 people. Early reservation is encouraged to secure your spot. |
